New Zealand Homestays feature in China's most popular TV Show - Daddy, Where are we Going?
Our New Zealand Homestays were featured in China's most popular TV show 'Dad! Where are we Going?
The show, which is watched by an estimated 404 million viewers was filmed in Rotorua and New Zealand’s central North Island for a week in 2014.
New Zealand is the only international destination to feature in the show which follows celebrity fathers Huang Lei, Lu Yi, Yang Wei, Cao Ge and Wu Zhen Yu as they stay with Rotorua Homestay families and explore the region.
In the two 100-minute long Rotorua episodes, the celebrities experience New Zealand culture and accomplish a series of missions with or against each other.
The celebrites stayed with New Zealand host families who involved them in activities and tourist attractions.
Staying in a Homestay
A family home is a place where we all feel safe, relaxed and comfortable. With filming of ‘Daddy, Where are we Going?’ in Rotorua, it was important that the Chinese celebrity children felt safe. A long-way from home, in a completely foreign culture and without their mothers’ comfort, these children (aged 3 – 8 years) quickly adopted their new kiwi Host families.
New Zealander’s are naturally hospitable
75 minutes (of the 200 that aired in China) featured the central theme - focusing on the interaction between the Chinese and New Zealand families. Naturally hospitable, the Rotorua Host families extended a warm welcome, making their guests feel at ease. The Homestays were all very clean and comfortable, and ranged from simple and humble to stylish and modern, and even included the luxury yacht, Pure Cruise.
With the serenity of Lake Rotoiti as the filming location, the Chinese celebrity and New Zealand children were quick to enjoy activities like bike riding, playing in the playground and swimming. These shared activities quickly built a bridge between the Chinese celebrity families and New Zealand families.
The importance of sharing meals together
How we feed our guests is also an important part of the New Zealand Homestay experience and there was an emphasis on homely activities like preparing and eating meals together. The Chinese celebrity families reciprocated by cooking a meal for the kiwi host families.
‘Homestay’ like a celebrity
The logistics of the filming - with a crew of over 200 members - meant that documenting the Chinese celebrities in New Zealand homestays was restricted to four houses and one luxury yacht, in a single accessible location - Tamatea Street, Lake Rotoiti.
For guests wanting to recreate the New Zealand Homestay experience and stay with host families (with or without children) in Rotorua or close to Hobbiton Movie set, there are a number of equivalent Homestay options available. The New Zealand Homestay Network has host families at lake, beach, bush, farm and city locations all over New Zealand. All hosts have been vetted for security, quality and price and adhere to New Zealand hosting standards.
